Workshops

  • What equipment do we need to bring?
Your digital camera - and if you have them - additional lenses and flash cards, tripod, spare battery and charger. Walking shoes or boots and waterproofs for the occasional wet day would also be useful. And if you feel more comfortable working on your own laptop, then please feel free to bring it.

  • The program...
Saturday begins with a brief talk about the controls on your digital camera and the basic principles of photography. How aperture and depth of field relate to the shutter speed and how to make correct exposures. We'll explain the basics of good composition and try to help you to learn how to "see" creative images.

  • Next...
a tour of mountain or coastal scenery. During each stage, easy for a moderately fit person, we explain how histograms can help to achieve the correct exposure and how to eliminate camera shake. We'll also explain why the "raw" mode should be used to maximise your cameras potential.

  • After Lunch...
we transfer to the "digital darkroom" located in the loft where our high spec dual-processor PC's are equipped with 22" LCD Screens. We will introduce you to Adobe Photoshop CS3, CS2 and Elements 5, software programs that will enable you to process the morning's photography. Under our supervision you can quickly learn and practise the techniques to improve and enhance your images to a quality that you may not have thought possible.

  • Simultaneously...
we'll teach you how to use Adobe Bridge to view and sort your files; then we'll explain curves and burning & dodging. We'll also teach you how to burn your images onto various types of storage media and explain the pros and cons of various file formats, particularly RAW capture. Finally we'll show you where DNG conversion fits in and how to convert your images.
