In Ireland you learn to expect the unexpected. The Hindu-Gothic Dromana Gates were originally built from wood and papier-mache to greet the owner of the Dromana Estate, Henry Villiers-Stuart and his new wife on their return from honeymoon in 1826. The couple were so enchanted with the gate that it was later reconstructed in stone.
There’s also a rather far-fetched story concerning the wife of the 16th Earl of Desmond who also lived at Dromana and was reputed to have died as the result of a fall from a cherry tree at the great age of 160 years old. So, with all the fairy tales surrounding the building, it needs a slightly surrealistic visual approach…
